Donor-advised funds (DAFs) have existed for over 80 years, but have been intensely marketed for the last 15 years as an alternative to private foundations. Most Development shops are unsure how to deal with them. Some assign DAFs to Major Gifts, others to Foundation Relations. Some classify DAFs as personal gifts, others as foundation gifts. So what is a DAF, really? Is it “like a foundation” or is it (as some marketers claim) “better than a foundation”? Or is it simply a vehicle for personal giving? This session decodes DAFs, explaining what they are, how they work, and where they fit into the total Development picture.

BWF Insight has analyzed the data from thousands of screened records from capacity verification projects we’ve conducted to demonstrate and quantify the value of verification. This session will define verification, cover some helpful strategies we developed, lessons we learned in the process, and quantify the value of conducting verification on screening records.
