As Helen Brown reminds us, March is Research Pride Month. To celebrate this occasion, several Apra North Texas board members are sharing their thoughts on Research and what it means to them. Jennifer Vann is our Communication Chair.
I welcomed 2019 with open arms this year, for it held several new opportunities for me and my family: a new job with a dedicated healthcare system, a return to my "hometown", and the opportunity to help grow the fundraising efforts as much as possible. In the first few months in my new position the most refreshing experience has been the response and overwhelming appreciation of the research. My peers not only see the value of the work, but they even come to rely on it as a valuable tool in the competitive environment. Dare I say, research actually has a seat at the fundraising table (even though historically we are all introverts and would choose to be behind our computer screens)!
When I entered the specific field of prospect research over six years ago my colleagues were happy to fill the position, however there was always a stigma that I was invasively digging around people's private information. Many times my family or friends, who still don't quite understand what I research, ask questions about if the work seems nosy or sneaky. To the contrary, part of what makes the work of a researcher so vital is the confidentiality and nature in which we handle the information at hand. Often times the data we use for research is purely analytic, looking for repetition of giving or patterns in giving, but personal information is equally important. In some cases it can help us avoid undesirable situations for both the prospect or donor and our front line fundraisers. The trust that is placed upon us from leadership should invoke pride from every researcher.
Hands down, my favorite aspect of the prospect research field is the network of amazing people. There is always more to learn, a different way to tackle a challenge, a new way to innovate and this group of peers is so warm and helpful. The challenges today's nonprofits face depend on research professionals to strategically problem solve and work as members of their teams towards sustainable solutions. While this may sound a bit daunting to some, the network of researchers is vast, growing, and we have each other's backs! No problem is too big or small for the APRA network and I truly feel so much pride in being associated with specialists of this caliber. Many fellow researchers welcomed me with open arms, just as I have welcomed the opportunities of this new year, and I am forever grateful and proud to be a part of this esteemed arm of fundraising professionals. Excitement stirs, when I think about the possibilities this year holds. When I consider the possibilities the future holds, the sky is the limit for me due to the doors opened by the role of research.
